Parenting with your Parents.
Posted on May 1st, 2009 No commentsYou will have a different parenting style than your parents. This is generally understood. Unfortunately, this will lead to conflict, many times. I have seen it in action, most recently with a friend who’s child loves to play charades. A toddler who is good at getting people to know what she wants without making a sound, as so many kids seem to be able to do today. To make sure she isn’t developmentally challenged, said friend insists that she “use her words” to get things, even when its obvious what she’s asking for. Makes sense to me, and I’ve seen that exact concept and phrasing, use your words, many times.
Grandma, however, just hands things over. So when mom says, use your words, toddler goes to granny.
Like I said, conflict.I intend to have a nice list of rules for behavior for my mom and father in law for when they take care of the munchkin, or visit long term. No, I don’t expect that to go over well either, but one big fight instead of a lot of little ones seems good to me.
Who else has encountered this issue, and what did you do to solve it?
